“Are Mirrors Magic?"
Ephesians 6:14-17
August 27, 2006
By Rebecca Enney

What do you see when you look into a mirror?  Some people say that a mirror only reflects what you look like on the outside.  I think that sometimes, when you look into a mirror, you see something about who you are and what you are really like, even on the inside.

Are mirrors magic?  No.  But sometimes, the person who is doing the looking can see more than the mirror reflects.

So it is for Uncle Floyd this morning.  Everyday he looks into the mirror as he shaves but sometimes, like today, he considers not just the chin that he is shaving.  He considers what he sees on the inside and who he really is.

Everyone loves Uncle Floyd.  He works hard as the sexton at Pastor Ed’s Church.  He is a true friend to all, especially Mrs. Potato Head.  Everybody knows that Uncle Floyd loves his nephew Barabas so much, that he and Frank, that is his brother and Barabas’s father, agreed that Uncle Floyd would adopt Barabas.  So Uncle Floyd is now Barabas’s step-father.  Except that Barabas, and everyone else, still call him Uncle Floyd.

When Uncle Floyd looked into the mirror this morning, he saw a man who everyday struggles with doing the right thing.  It is not like it is easy for Uncle Floyd to always do what is right and good.  The truth is that sometimes he is not only tempted to do wrong, sometimes he HAS done the wrong thing.  The truth is, we ALL have sometimes done the wrong thing for the wrong reason.

And so it is, we need to prepare ourselves against those bad ideas and wrong deeds and hurtful thoughts we have.  So it is that we should don the Armor Of God.

After Uncle Floyd finished shaving, he got dressed.  He put on his shirt and tie, he put on his jacket.  He tied his shoes.   And he checked the hairs on his head.  At least that is what the mirror reflected.

But what Uncle Floyd saw happening, the mirror could not reflect.  What Uncle Floyd saw was that he put on the:

Belt of Truth.

The breastplate of righteousness.

Shoes to carry him to places to tell the Good News.

A shield of Faith

The helmet of salvation

The sword of the Spirit.

Uncle Floyd has put on the Armor Of God.

This is what Uncle Floyd sees in the mirror.

Are mirrors magic?  No.  But there is a lot more about who we are than what a mirror can show.

THE END
