“The First Sign”
John 2:1-11
January 14, 2007
By Rebecca Enney

The SCS Teacher is having her class do a play about the 1st miracle that Jesus performed.  It was at a wedding in Cana of Galilee.

“Oh, Oh!” said Running Chairs, rushing in late. “A wedding!  Like, you know, I want to be the bride! Like can I!  Please?  Please?”

“Yes Running Chairs, you may be the bride.  The bride has a non speaking role.  Here is your head dress.  Now, Barabas, here is your costume to be Jesus.  And Elizabeth, you have your blue scarf  for you to be Mary, the mother of Jesus.  Sam, you are a disciple and Haman, you will be the Chief Steward and Polly, you are the servant girl.  Now, is every body ready?  Pastor Ed, start the video camera.

“Oh! Oh!”  Running Chairs interrupted to say  “Like what does a ‘non speaking role’ mean?”  “It means you don’t get to say any words,” said the SCS Teacher.  Running Chairs pouted and took her place.  And again the SCS Teacher nodded to Pastor Ed to start the video camera.

“Jesus, my son,” said Mary.  “The wedding party is so embarrassed.  They have run out of wine.”

Jesus asked “Why do you tell this to me?  I have never performed miracles before.”

Mary said to the servant girl “Do whatever he tells you to do.”

Jesus said to the servant girl “See those six big empty jugs over there?  (actually, there is one real jug and five pretend jugs) Go fill them with water.”

So the servant girl Polly did as Jesus asked.  She walked to the village well and filled jug #1.  She carried it back and then she carried jug #2  to the well and filled it.  She did the same for jug #3, jug #4, jug #5 and jug #6.  Then she went back to Jesus.

“Now pour some for Haman.” Said Barabas.  “Oops, I mean for the Chief Steward.”  The servant girl Polly poured a glass of water from the jug and took it to the Chief Steward, but she was skeptical.  “I don’t think the steward is going to be fooled.  He will notice that this is water and not wine.”

Haman, the Chief Steward took the glass and, suspecting nothing, lifted it to his lips.  “Hmmmmm.” He said in an ‘oh hum’ kind of voice.  And he tasted it. “Hmmm Mmmm!” He said in a very excited voice!  He went to the bride and said “You saved the best for last!  Now THAT is good wine!”

Wine!  Not water?  The servant Polly and the Disciple Sam saw what happened.  Jesus had turned that water into wine!  Not just a little water into a little wine, but a LOT of water into a LOT of wine.  And not just wine, but Hmmm Mmmmm wine.!  It was a miracle.  It was a sign.

And this first sign from Jesus, from God, shows us that God’s Love and Forgiveness comes when we need it.  And there is a lot of it and it is very good when it comes.

The SCS Teacher nodded for Pastor Ed to turn off the camera and the play was completed.  THE END
