“Walk of the Cross”
John 12:1-8
March 25, 2007

Pastor Ed and his wife The SCS Teacher are having dinner with their children Larry and Loretta.  Supper time is important to the horse family because it is a time every day that all four of them are together.

“So,” Pastor Ed asked his children. “How was playgroup today.”  “It was great.” said Loretta.  “I was the ‘line leader.”

“It was no fun at all!” said Larry.  “Wilber laughed at me because I wasn’t so good at drinking from the water fountain.  Then Marianne stuck her tongue out at me and when I stuck my tongue out at her the teacher saw me and made me apologize to her.  Playgroup was dumb today.”

“Doesn’t it seem that some days just go all wrong?  I hope that next week will be better.” said Pastor Ed, trying to comfort his son Larry.

“How was your day, dear?” Pastor Ed asked his wife.

“I was at the church today helping with the booklet for the Way Of The Cross.  I guess you didn’t see me there.”

“What IS the weight of the cross?” asked Loretta.

“It must have been heavy cause Jesus could hardly carry it.” said Larry.

“It is called the WAY Of The Cross.” the SCS Teacher explained to them.  “It will be a path at church that will have 14 stations with artwork.  The booklet will have prayers and scripture for each of the 14 stations.”

“Will there be a train at the station?” asked Loretta.  “I want to ride on the train!”

“No, you will walk to each station.  It will be in Fellowship Hall.”

“But what if you go to the wrong station?  What if you get lost?” asked Larry.

“Well, there will be signs that will point the way to walk.” explained Pastor Ed.

“Can we go on the Walk Of The Cross?” asked Larry.

The SCS Teacher looked at her husband.  “It is a very sad walk.  Do you think they are old enough?” she asked.

Pastor Ed looked at his wife and nodded.  Then he explained to Larry and Loretta about how starting next Sunday, we will remember the Way that Jesus took, that last week of his life here on earth.

“The Way Of The Cross does not start until NEXT week, but the lessons today are like a sign pointing us towards that Way.  You see, in TODAY’S lesson, Jesus is having supper at a friend’s home when Mary came and anointed Jesus’ feet with an expensive perfume used when you bury a person who has died.  Jesus knew this was a sign.  He knew that his Way was to be to the cross where he would die.”   (Place crucifix on table)

The horse children were silent for a moment and then Larry said “I think we are old enough, cause we know that Jesus loves us and that is why he went on that Walk of the Cross.”

“Yes, I want to go too.” said Loretta.  So next Sunday evening the horse family will be taking that sad walk.  Perhaps your family will take that walk also.   THE END
