“Sit Down and Talk”
Acts 21:13-14 & John 14:23
May 13, 2007
By Rebecca Enney

“We sat down and spoke to the women who had gathered there.  The Lord opened her heart to listen eagerly to what was said by Paul.”  Acts 21:13-14

It’s Sunday morning and the Bishop is about finished at church for the day.  He had an odd dream last night about two potatoes.

“I sat with two potatoes?!” he said to himself when he woke up this morning!  “I didn’t EAT them, I SAT with them!? Two potatoes!”  He was still puzzling over this as he came down the steps from the church office.

Now, Mr. Potato Head had a quick meeting after church so his mother, Mrs. Potato Head, and his wife, Mrs. Potato Head were both sitting, waiting in the Gathering Space.  Most of the people had already gone home and it was nice and quiet sitting there, just the two of them, mother-in-law with daughter-in-law.

While they were waiting they saw the Bishop coming down the stairs.

“Hello ladies!” the Bishop said as he approached them.

“Good Afternoon.” they answered, rather formally.

The Bishop looked at the two ladies . . .and he remembered his dream.  “I dreamt about two potatoes and HERE are two potatoes.  In my dream God said I should SIT WITH two potatoes and talk with them!”

The Bishop kind of wanted to hurry on past, but a little voice in his head said he should stop and sit with these two potatoes.  And being a Bishop, he knew to obey that little voice.  Because sometimes, that is how God speaks to us.

“I hope someone has Mother’s Day plans for two beautiful women like YOU!” he said.

They all laughed.  Then the Bishop SAT DOWN with them.  And they talked for almost half an hour!  The two Mrs. Potato Heads got to ask the Bishop all sorts of questions and he, being a very wise Bishop, was able to talk about Faith in Jesus Christ and how, when we LOVE Jesus, we OBEY him.  And the very best way to OBEY Jesus is to show His LOVE to all. The two women opened their hearts to listen eagerly to what was said.

All too soon, Mr. Potato Head came down the steps from his meeting.

“Well!” he said is his usual big, important sounding voice, “It’s a good day to see the Bishop!”  And then, laughing at his own joke he said “Ha ha!  I see you found MY two favorite sweet potatoes!”

Mr. Potato Head and the Bishop shook hands.  Then the Bishop said “It really means a lot to me to sit these two potatoes.  I hope you have dinner plans for them for Mother’s Day.”

“Indeed we do!  I have made reservations at the Capital City Mall to eat at Boardwalk Fries!  We must be on our way.”   The three potatoes left for dinner.

As the Bishop watched them leave, he thought to himself “I believe God wanted me to sit and talk with them.  I think that was what my dream meant.”

You know, sometime God may come to YOU in a dream.  He may ask YOU to sit and talk with two potatoes!

THE END
