“Mr. Potato Head Ascends”
May 4, 2008
By Rebecca Enney

This is Margaret.  She is a Security Guard at Camp Hill Mall.  She is really excited today because her brother Captain Hale is coming to visit all the way from Seattle, Washington.  It’s kind of a long complicated story about all of this.  You see, Margaret doesn’t have a car, which is not usually a problem, because she can walk to work or take the bus, except that her brother is coming to BWI Airport which is 75 miles from Camp Hill.  So last week Margaret was telling Mrs. Potato Head about how she had this problem getting to the airport 75 miles away with no car to retrieve her brother for his visit.  Mrs. Potato Head called her son, Mr. Potato Head and asked if HE could drive down to get Captain Hale.

“Well, well, well!” he had said.  “Of course I can do that for Margaret!  I’ll bring the Tater Tots along too.  What is the date?”

And so here is Mr. Potato Head and Polly and Haman and Margaret all standing in the big huge lobby at BWI Airport.  They kept looking and looking at the crowds of people walking from here to there and from there to here but saw no sign of Captain Hale.

“I will ascend the escalator to the higher level and search for him,” Mr. Potato Head said importantly.

So Mr. Potato Head rode the escalator up and up and up.  The Tater Tots and Margaret watched as he ascended up through the lobby.

As they stood there staring up towards the ceiling a voice came up behind them.  “Who are you looking for?”

Margaret quickly turned and who did she see, but her much loved brother Captain Hale?!  Oh, and they hugged and hugged, big bear hugs!

“Why were you looking at the ceiling?” he finally asked.

Haman quickly answered saying “We were looking at Daddy cause daddy ascended up the escalator but we forgot to look for what we came for cause we came for YOU!”

Polly wailed “But where is our Daddy?!”

And Captain Hale said “Your daddy will soon come back down the same way he went up.”

In today’s Bible lesson from the book of Acts, Jesus was talking to the disciples and when he finished, He ascended into Heaven because His time here on earth was completed!  The disciples stood there looking at the sky when suddenly two men in white robes appeared and asked “Why are you looking at the sky?  Jesus will soon come back down the same way he went up.  But in the meantime, you must pay attention to what it is that you are to do here on earth!”

The disciples realized that what they (. . . and us too) are here on earth to do is to tell the whole wide world about the Love of God in Jesus Christ His only Son!

Meanwhile, back at the airport, the self important Mr. Potato Head did indeed come back down the escalator and Polly stopped crying.  However, Margaret was so happy to see her brother again that she started crying.

And Jesus, who calls us his own . . . Jesus looked upon them with love.

THE END
